A patent application by members of the Babel working group for measuring a patient’s immune response to his or her kidney transplant has received a positive vote from the European Patent Office. This lays the foundation for the clinical application of this method, as the high costs for further development and testing can only be financed with the granted property rights. The end result should be a test that provides information similar to a transplant biopsy, but only requires a blood and urine sample and can therefore be easily applied to transplanted patients.
